Description
English: Action at Sea: a French Frigate Completely Dismasted

An undated painting showing the effects of battle during an unidentified action at sea, probably during the French Revolutionary Wars. In the centre a French frigate is shown completely dismasted. The wreckage of her masts and sails can be seen floating in the water around her hull. Her flag is draped over her stern. Survivors can be seen on deck surveying the damage and one sailor is silhouetted against the skyline as he holds on to the stump of the mizenmast. Other figures are shown amidst the remains of the main mast. On the left is a French ship still intact and firing as the battle rages behind. An English ship with her sails full of shot holes is shown on the right, she is also firing towards the ships in the distance.
