Description

Ado, wat staat voor Arbeid door onvolwaardigen (vanaf 1962 Apart Doelmatig Onverwoestbaar), was producent van kinderspeelgoed en later ook van kindermeubeltjes. De merknaam werd gewoonlijk met kleine letters geschreven. Het eerste speelgoed werd in de periode 1925-1933 gemaakt door tuberculosepatiënten van het sanatorium Berg en Bosch in Apeldoorn. Zij vervaardigden het houten speelgoed als onderdeel van de therapie waarmee zij werden voorbereid op de terugkeer in de maatschappij.

Ontwerper van de autootjes, treinen en meubeltjes was Ko Verzuu (1901-1971). Met zijn ontwerpen sloot hij aan bij de strakke vormgeving en felle kleuren van de kunststroming De Stijl. Verzuu liet zich daarbij sterk inspireren door de architecten en meubelontwerpers Gerrit Rietveld en Henk Wouda. Het degelijke, maar dure speelgoed was voornamelijk te koop bij grote warenhuizen als Metz & Co en De Bijenkorf.
