Chicago has grown to be the greatest meat-packingcenter and grain market in the world, because the cityis so near the fertile prairies, and because the railroadand steamer lines centering at Chicago reach so large apart of our country. Minneapolis has fine , water power and is near thewheat regions. This city therefore leads the world inmaking flour. The great agricultural region of the middle Mississippivalley has its chief trade center at St. Louis. This cityhas a very large traffic by railroads on all sides and byboats down the great river. Besides the prairies of the Mississippibasin there is a region east of theStaked plain, known as the Texas prai-ries. Much of this prairie region is tree-less but not barren like the dry plains
