Soon after this change in its course, the Zambesiattains a lower level in rushing over the stupendousVictoria Falls, discovered by Livingstone in the month ofNovember 1855, and rivalled in grandeur by those ofNiagara alone. The native name of the falls isMosioatunya, since, viewing them with awe at a distanceand referring to the vapour and noise, they say Mosi oatunya — smoke does sound there. After twenty minutes sail from Kalai, Dr. Living- VICTORIA FALLS. 427 stone says, we came in sight for the first time of thecolumns of vapour, appropriately called smoke, rising ata distance of five or six miles, exactly as when large tractsof grass are burned in Africa.
