Which of the runners is rich ? Which ispoor ? Perhaps the girl is a princess and theboy a poor shepherd boy. Think what elseeach may be. Who is judging the race? What tells youthe judge is a king ? How is the king separatedfrom the people who have come to watch therace ? How is the race course separated fromthe rest of the field ? Look at the faces of the onlookers. Whichbelong to the wealthy, or noble class? Inwhom will they be interested ? Which belongto the same class as the boy ? Perhaps they arerelated to him. Look at the eyes of the people in the picture.Are they all looking at the girl and boy who 123

Why is the rich girl or princess racing withthe poor boy ? Perhaps she claims to be theswiftest runner in the kingdom. If this be so,what reward will the boy have if he win therace ? What will happen if he lose ? Perhapsthe poor boy has done something for which heis to be punished, as, taking wood from the kingsforest to make a fire for some sick, or old, orhelpless person ; or he may have killed one ofthe kings deer or birds to keep from starving.Either of these things would have been punishedby death in the old days. Perhaps the kinghas given him a chance to escape punishment —by defeating the fleet princess in a race. Perhapsthey are running for some great reward, as apurse of gold.
