Indeed, it has been said that the republic of Mexico usedthe Yaquis to punish regiments that were insubordinate or suspected of revo-lutionary sentiments. A campaign against the tribes of Sonora effectuallydisposed of disaffected soldiers. The Yaqui warriors are fierce, brave, unrelenting. Many stories aretold in Mexico of how small parties have defended mountain passes against OUR INDIAN ALLIES. 125 hundreds of Mexicans, until every one of them had been killed. In the sum-mer of 1892 thirty Yaqui women in mens clothes were found at different timesamong the dead after night skirmishes. The youths are taught to becomesharpshooters at sixteen, and at twenty they are generally experts.
