r-sional strains in the longtransmitting shafts used inother machines. The leversto manipulate the horizontaland vertical movement of thedrilling head, and to engageand disengage the feeds, start, stop and reverse the driving mechanism, are grouped soas to be handled by the operator from one position, and thehandles to manipulate the spindle are also grouped, thus per-mitting the largest possible product. As we have said, it is asimilar machine incorporating milling feeds that is in use inthe Southwark shops, the importance of which, in combinationwith the great range of speeds mentioned, will be appreciated. The operators platform is carried by a swing frame, so that asthe head approaches the bed the platform accommodates itselfto the lowest point.
