The main reasonfor Californias leadership in this industry is its climate,which is so admirably suited for this cultivation that it ispractically hopeless for other states to compete.

Abouthalf of this numberof pounds of seedsis onion seed whichis shipped in bulk, towholesale dealersthroughout thecountry and is ex-ported as well toforeign merchants.All the seeds grownin other places in California are dried entirely in the open air, and there canbe little doubt that through this agency of pure air and warmsunshine the resulting product is far more vigorous andgerminates more readily than that produced with the assist-ance of artificial drying. In the Santa Clara valley there areno scorching heats and no biting frosts and while rain usuallyfalls in ample quantity to mature the plants during theirgrowth,
