uberculosis from a posttuberculous lung. The distinguishing feature between the active and latenttuberculous process is this: In the active state the foci ofinfection are shown by shadow-spots, each surrounded by ahalo, which merge into other similar foci, so that frequentlya large portion of the lung appears solidified. This halo, nodoubt, represents an area of infiltration about a tuberculousfocus. Quite different are the findings in the latent or post tuber-cular state, where, by physical examination, the resonance ofthe lung is perfect and no other symptoms of tuberculosis aredemonstrated. Here we discern the cicatrices remaining afterthe disease has healed, standing out clearly, resembling spider-like figures imbedded in entirely clear lung tissue. The distinction between these two conditions is illustratedby stereo-radiographs Nos. 5 and 6. ACTIVE TUBERCULOSIS. Stereo 6 represents the active disease. The patient, a youngman, twenty-six, an inmate of the Tuberculosis Institute at
Text Appearing After Image:
Beck: Stereoscopic Radiography L65 Dunning, Illinois, is in the advanced stages of tuberculosis, asmay be judged from the radiograph alone. Viewing the singleplate, it appears that nearly the entire lung is solidified, theshadows covering nearly the entire area of the lungs. Viewing, however, the stereoscopic pair by means of the prisms, thisillusion is dispelled. We obtain a correct optical view. Theshadows, which, in the single plate, were spread in one plane,on the plate, are now shifted in the various depths of the chest,so that they appear like solid bodies imbedded in clear lung-tissue, and the consolidation does not appear nearly so ex-tensive. POST-TUBERCULOUS LUNG. Stereo 7 illustrates the post-tubercular state. A young man,twenty-four years, who for sixteen years had tuberculoussinuses of his right knee, applied to me for treatment. Theaffected limb was six inches shorter than the other, due toatrophy. Regarding the limb as useless, I advised amputationabove the knee, which I
