Examination Before Labor: Examination of lower fetal pole (from a photograph). THE CONDUCT OF NORMAL LABOR. 351 plane than the back, and a distinct sulcus separates it from the head. Theexamination of the dorsum is facilitated by applying one hand over the upperfetal pole and pressing downward in the axis of the uterus. The back of thechild is thus rendered more convex, and is thrust outward toward the abdomi-nal wall within easier reach of the examining hand. The small parts are usually felt as nodules which glide about under thetouch : they are best identified by circular, rubbing motions; sometimes a fetalmember may be mapped out through its whole extent. Except in the case oftwins, where there are usually arms and legs in various directions, finding thesmall parts in one section of the abdomen confirms the location of the dorsalplane in the opposite region.
