[edit]DescriptionAn Daingean (Dingle), The Dingle Regatta - geograph.org.uk - 1443294.jpg |
English: An Daingean (Dingle): The Dingle Regatta The Dingle Regatta is traditionally held annually on the third weekend in August so it was going to be taking place again on the day (16 August 2009) after this photograph was submitted. In this view from 1990 a couple of four man currachs taking part in the regatta round the harbour pier.
The currach (also spelt as curach or curragh) is a flat-bottomed, keel-less boat used mainly for fishing and transporting livestock. The shallow-draught currach is traditionally constructed of a covered wooden frame. This covering was once made from animal hides, but is now mostly made from canvas treated with tar and grease. The highly manoeuvrable currach is usually rowed with bladeless oars held in place by wooden tholepins, but some are fitted with a mast and a small lug sail. In 1976 Tim Severin sailed a leather currach from here at Dingle to Newfoundland to demonstrate that the legendary 6th century voyage of St Brendan the Navigator was technically possible. |
