Simon Vouet wasborn in 150,0 and diedin l64Q. He is regardedas the promoter of thegreat art movement inFrance founded on theRenaissance. He visited Italy and studied therethe works of some ofthe great artists, includ-ing Paul Veronese,Valentin, and Cara-vaggio. On his recallto Paris by Louis XIII.,in 1627, Vouet becameprincipal painter to theKing, and had apart-ments allotted to him atthe Louvre. He wasthe master of Le Brim,Pierre Mignard, LeSueur, and many others.While in Italy LouisXIII. had already ac-corded him a pension.He was for a long timeemployed on making de-signs for tapestries. Healso gave lessons to theKing in crayon drawing.He is regarded as thefounder of the Frenchschool. As he was oneof the designers of tap-estries, I have thoughtit best to show oneor two engravings fromhis works to givesome idea of his style.He was a prodigiousworker, and a great number of his works have been engraved.
