Steel.- The steel used as longitudinal reinforcingwas taken from the stock on hand. It had a yield point of 33,300lb. per sq. in. and an ultimate strength of 50,500 lb. per sq. in,

8 Six 24-in. test pieces of each size cf the spiral wire were furnished by the manufacturers cf the spirals. The l/2-in.rods were tested in the 50,000-lb. Piehle machine and the 5/l6-in.and 3/l6-in. sizes were tested in the 10,000-lb. Olsen wire-test-ing machine. Elongation in 8-in,,reduction in area, and ulti-mate loads were determined for each specimen; measurements ofelongation over a 2-in. gage length were also made for each testby means of an extensometer designed by Professor H. F. Mooreof the University of Illinois. The results of these readingsgave smooth curves, which are shown on pages 40—4.3.It shouldbe noticed there is no break in these curves such as would indi-cate a definite yield point, nor was any drop cf beam noticedin testing. From appearances these test specimens were probablystraightened out after having been bent into spirals. Thisstraightening would probably in seme measure account for thelack of a definite yield point. of reinforcing does not fulfill the requ
