English: Ancient Wall, modern technology A nearby notice reads
"Hadrian's Wall Consolidation Works, September 2008-March 2009. The work being carried out here is to consolidate and protect this stretch of Hadrian's Wall. You will see that a dry stone wall is being re-established along the line of Hadrian's Wall. This stretch of Hadrian's Wall was exposed by archaeologists in 1860 and is beginning to deteriorate. The consolidation work will ensure that the Wall here will continue to be sound and visible for visitors in the future. The field boundary on top of Hadrian's Wall is also being restored as part of this project. This is to help manage grazing which will preserve the rare plants that grow on the Whinsill rock. The grassland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The work is being funded by Natural England's Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, with advice from Northumberland National Park, Hadrian's Wall Heritage and English Heritage." A haul road which can be seen in the foreground has been constructed up to the site. Seen from Hadrian's Wall National Trail. |
