pus ! Thecharm must certainly be due to that lovely white shellwhich is prettily ribbed and fluted, and so transparent asto show the varying silver and rose tints of the bodyunderneath. 2. Resemblance to the Octopus.—Notwithstanding theseattractions, our eyes are now sufficiently trained to find inthe argonaut many points of resemblance to the octopus. There are the unmistakable suckers on the arms, the greatwide-awake eyes, and the curious funnel projecting be-yond the shell just below them. 3. So far from sailing in this fantasticfashion, the argonaut rarely comes to the surface, butpasses its days in deep water or upon the bottom of theocean. Here it crawls head-downward, with its shell overits back, using its arms in placeof feet. 6. In reality the argonaut swims just as its relatives do—by squirting itself backward. Gathering the arms to-gether in a straight line, as shown near the middle ofFig. 113, it takes in sea-water u
