They are further aided in swimming by theirsmooth, slimy coating, which generally consists of scalesoverlapping one another like tiles on a roof. 3. Dr. Hartwig says of fishes: We wisely endeavor toimitate this peculiar form in the construction of our ships,yet the rapidity with which the fastest clipper cleaves thewaters is nothing to the velocity of an animal formed toreside in that element.
