Text Appearing Before Image:
leopardwhen they bring their sharp horns into use. In spite of theirstrength, however, they are very timid, and so quick to scentdanger and run away from it that they are very hard to capture. There is something of stateliness and dignity in these animals, whether they be in repose or in motion. Ordinarily they moveslowly, but under the stress of danger they display wonderfulspeed. In spite of difficulties, however, they are sometimeskilled by native hunters, and their young are taken alive andsold to collectors formenageries and zoological gardens. Theirchief enemy is the painted hyena (Lycao?i pictiis), a beast ofprey which bears a close resemblance to the hyena. Thisanimal, as our picture shows, hunts in packs, and so terrifiesand confuses the oryx that it cannot defend itself long and isdragged down and torn to pieces by its hungry pursuers. Butthe end generally comes after some of its tormentors have beenput to death by angry thrusts from the powerful horns of thedesperate animal.
Text Appearing After Image:
An Oryx Antelope pursued by Painted Hyenas, or Dogs of the Desert.
