English: Rct. Nicholas Barnes, a 20-year-old native of Annapolis, Md., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Barnes is training with Platoon 1060, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Aug. 29, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps because, growing up in Annapolis (near the U.S. Naval Academy), I spent a lot of time around Marines,” said Barnes, a 2012 graduate of Broadneck High School in Annapolis and a current student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. “Since I was a little kid, I was incredibly inspired and grateful for everything Marines do, and joining the Marine Corps is the only thing I’ve ever been truly driven toward doing.” Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis) |
