f the hand symbol is not clear. The larger pit east of the hand is an extensivebasin constantly tilled with water from rains and snows. The dots surrounding thepit represent Ursa Minor. The short lines, no longer than an inch in the pictograph,indicate the number of years consumed by the Hlewekwe in going from H;inlipin-kla to Shipapolima and thence to Itiwanna, the site of the present Zuiii. Thehuman figure is an ancient Shiwi before the tail and water moss had been removed See p. 34. b While tradition j.ioints to the far northwest as the Zuiii place of nativity, the belief, not only ofthe ^Hlewekwe but of the combined priesthood, that snows were unknown until brought by theettowe of the Hlewekwe on their northern journey furnishes an interesting subject for investiga-tion. According to the Hlewekwe, the roots of grasses, after the snow disappeared, contained muchmoisture and furnished refreshment for them when thirstv.
