Text Appearing Before Image:
e bloodroot blossoms show white on the borders of the wet meadows, that the drumming ofthe snipe may be heard. This is a part of his love making, which is quite similar inmethod to that of the woodcock. In the early morning, or at evening, or, when theweather is dull and cloudy, at any time of the day, the snipe may be seen to rise inwide spirals high above the earth, often almost disappearing from sight, and then to dartdown from on high with stiffened wings, uttering a twittering humming call, which hasbeen said to be caused in part by the stiff wing feathers against the air in the rapiddescent, but is no doubt.vocal. The rapid fall of thesnipe somewhat resembles the downward dart of the night hawk. The nest is a primitive affair; just a little hollow in the ground, lined with a fewblades of grass, in which the four eggs lie with their points all together. They are ofa dull clay color, dotted and splashed with large and small spots of a blackish brown. The young leave the nest as soon as they are hatched, and run about after the mother,as
