The Dempsey was originatednear Trenton in Prince EdwardCounty, by Mr. P. C. Dempsey>the late well-known Director ofour Association for that district.It was produced from a seed ofa Bartlett, fertilized with Duch-ess dAngouleme. The tree is agood grower and quite produc-tive. The fruit is firm and con-sequently would ship well. A Plate of Dempsey Pears (reduced Description : Fruit large,oblong, obovate, pyriform ; skinsmooth, yellowish-green, withbrownish-red cheek in sun ;stem about one inch long, setin a fleshy base, and with almostno cavity ; calyx nearly closedin a moderately deep unevenbasin, core small. Flesh white,fine grained, tender, almostmelting, with sweet deliciousflower. Season, last of Oc-tober. November.

Fruit, large to very large ; obo-vate ; stem pale green, turningyellow at maturity, with numerouslarge brown dots and patches ofrusset ; stem, curved, stout, from1 inch to lj inches long, set in anopen uneven cavity ; calyx, open,in a basin of moderate depth andnot very regular.
