Considering the smallness of the available force, a good deal ofattention has been given to evangelistic work. During the year twotrips were made through the Eastern or Chiquimula circuit, theextreme points reached being two days from the capital. An itinerating tour was made by one of the students to Quezaltenango, thesecond city of the republic, some four days from Guatemala City. Itis reported to be a good centre for work among the Indian tribes, andtherefore it is very desirable that it should be occupied at an early day.Many villages were visited during the itinerating tours, and large num-bers of copies of the Scriptures sold and subscriptions received for thelittle religious paper published by the mission. 80 GUATEMALA. made it impossible to attempt work in the village of Villa Nueva.The most systematic effort at ))erseciUion was made in the village ofSan Rosita, some two leagues from Guatemala City. As members ofthe town council and the government secretary favored the attempt toestablish Protestant worship, an effort was made to remove them, butfailed. At first meetings were held in the school-house, but as thiswas likely to involve the local authorities, meetings were discontinued,and the work was carried on privately. A lot has since been pur-chased and a small building is being erected on it by those interestedin the work. When it is completed, it is expected that public worshipwill be resumed.
