Altarpiece may be taken as the start-ing-point in the study of his development, and as repre-senting the earliest joint work of the two brothers. Vasaris account of the paintings in the Chapel is fullof errors. ^^ They executed for the Cardinal of Portugal an oilpainting in S. Miniato al Monte, outside Florence, whichwas placed on the Altar of his Chapel; and thereon theydepicted S. James the Apostle, S. Eustace, and S. Vincent,which have been much commended, and Piero in particularpainted on the walls some Prophets in oil, (which he hadlearnt from Andrea dal Castagno) in the spaces of theangles below the architrave, where are the lunettes of thearches; and in a mezzo tondo, an Annunciation with threefigures. * The Annunciation contains but two figures—theVirgin and Archangel—and is by the hand ofAlesso Baldovinetti, as also are the Prophets below thevaulting. By the hand of Antonio are the twofrescoed Angels over the Altar, which are un-noticed by Vasari, and but little known to thegeneral public, thanks to their ill-lighted position onthe wall.* The Chapel dates from 146if and was erected twoyears after the death of the young Cardinal,^ whopassing through Florence from Rome on a papal missionto Germany, was taken ill and died there in 1459, atthe age of twenty-six. The most renowned artists ofthe day were employed in the work, and even in itspresent ruined state, the Chapel remains one of themost perfect and representative monuments of theolder masters of the fifteenth century. It was designedby Antonio Rossellino, by whom also is the Tombitself with the recumbent statue, which covers oneentire wall.
