colloped capitals. From every alternate shaft spranga large arch decorated with the billet moulding, and formingan interlacing series along the wall. The total height of thearcade was 8^ feet. Over the arcade was a plain belt of twocourses of ashlar, above which the wall was of rubble. Thechapter-house was not vaulted, but covered from the first bya wooden roof. According to the list of benefactions, Thomas of Nashenden the elder, after the burning of ourchurch and offices, gave all the material wherewith thechapter-house was covered,* but it is uncertain whetherthe fire referred to is that of 1137 or 1179. At some time during the fourteenth centurya new roof of six bays was put upon the chapter-house, thetie beams of which rested on corbels in the form of angelsholding shields. The weather-beaten remains of these stillexist. The former pitch of the roof and the two gables wereprobably lowered when the new roof was put on. Much aboutthe same time the westernmost bay of the chapter-house wascut off by a stone arcade and vaulted in three bays to carrya low bridge or gallery about 7i feet wide. This was builtto allow of direct access from the dorter to the church with-out going through the cloister.
