Periods of joyous colorhave alternated with periods of more or lesscoldness and severity of decoration. Evenwithin our own history these color cyclesas applied to architecture particularly, haveshown very marked changes. The purewhites and neutral tints of colonial timesgradually gave way to the richer effects ofthe Victorian style.
