ROCK EXCAVATION FOR SAN FRANCISCOPIER, GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE G\ T„ HE site of the SanFrancisco pier of the Golden Gate Bridgeis a rock ledge. 1125 feet off shore, thedepth of water varying from 52 to 87 feetbelow mean lower low water. The excava-tion is in the shape of a rectangle, 130 by190 feet, with splayed corners, and thetotal yardage in the vertical prism downto elevation—95 is 28,600. The water at the site is exceedinglvrough, and the ebb tide has occasionalvelocities as high as 6 knots. Anv attemptto loosen this rock by drilling and blastingwould have necessitated a separate drllingframe for each drill resting on the ground byA. E GRAHAM to prevent breakage of tools by pitching ofthe drill barge. The holes obtained wouldbe small and difficult to load and muchmore mechanism would have been neces-sary than in the method adopted, alsomuch more time would have been consumedin drilling.
