THE ARCHITKCT AND ENGINEER ^ 34 ► JUNE, NINETEEN THIRTY-THHEE south of Mexico City) we took a little nar-rou gauge railway which starts from Mor-elia and runs over some incredibly steepgrades in the mountains down into the hotcoffee country to a place called Uruapan.There we found the real old Mexican at-mosphere untainted by modern influences.Already we had had beautiful opals offeredus for a mere song at the railway station ofQueretaro — reminding us of Prescotts stands in the portales or among the sur-roundings trees. In some places old menand women sat before their wares with im-mobile faces, their taciturnity making usfeel that Indian blood was in their veins.At other places the venders were youngerand gayer, consisting of pretty girls andswains who furnished music of mandolinand guitar.
