Another wonder around the streets of Leamington Spa town centre. So much regency architecture.
Grade II listed building. Arden House and Attached Railings, Royal Leamington Spa ROYAL LEAMINGTON SPA SP3166SW CLARENDON SQUARE 1208-1/1/114 (West side) 19/11/53 Nos.18, 19 AND 20 Arden House and attached railings GV II 3 houses, now residential home and attached railings. c1828-1832, with later additions and alterations. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and Welsh slate roof with cast-iron railings and verandah. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basement and attics to gables, 7 first-floor windows of which the centre 3 project; 2-storey, single entrance bay recessed to sides. First floor has 10-pane French windows in tooled, eared architraves throughout. Second floor: 6/6 sashes in similar architraves with horns. Modillion cornice, blocking course rises to central upshot with indented plaque with anthemion frieze; cornice to centre, copings to sides. Ground floor: central and end entrances; central entrance, 3 steps to part-glazed, 4-panel door with margin-lights with elliptical overlight with gothic glazing, within distyle Doric porch with engaged pilasters, frieze, dentil cornice and blocking course. Side entrances, 3-panel door to left and 4-panel, part-glazed door to right behind Doric screens which abut No.17 (qv) to left and No.21 (qv) to right. Otherwise four 6/6 and two 2/2 sashes with eared architraves and sills with horns and inserted entrances. Basement has 3/6 and casement windows. Roof stacks. First floor has verandah with heart-and-anthemion motif and tent roof. INTERIOR: central entrance hall with modillion cornice and arch to rear hall. Reception rooms have decorative cornices. Staircase to right side has turned balusters. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps and to area have anthemion finials. HISTORICAL NOTE: a complete square of stucco terraces laid out c1828 to the plans of PF Robinson, architect, of Brook Street, Mayfair. The houses were completed c1832, the gardens in the Square were planted with trees in May 1830. Nos 11-21 (consec) form an architectural set piece of fine buildings.
