| Description |
English: Ardvreck Castle The castle was built around 1490 as the seat of the MacLeods' of Assynt. Its place in history is however one of infamy. Following his defeat at the battle of Carbisdale (also called Culrain)in April 1650 the Marquis of Montrose sought refuge here but was betrayed by Neil MacLeod of Assynt and taken to Edinburgh where he was executed. Meanwhile MacLeod claimed his reward of £25,000 (Scots) part of which was paid in 'sour meal'. |
