breakers. The only hope of thecrew is the anchor. This has been thrown out. The natural question in everyheart, as the chain creaks and strainsand snaps to the dashing power of theangry waves, is: Will the anchor hold ? It is interesting to learn from the painterthat the inspiration for this picture wasa scene that he actually witnessed, where, fortunately, during a long period of fright-ful suspense, the anchor did hold, and thevessel reached a port of safety. In December or January, almost anycold, frosty day, when everything cracklesand sparkles under the feet, any one ofthe residents of Hoboken coming over toNew York in the ferryboat may see sucha scene as Mr. Grant has painted in his Safe in Port. The great transatlanticliner limping into port, days overdue, with rigging, smokestack, rails, bow andsides covered with ice, and smoke lazilycreeping out of the stacks, tells her ownstory.
