ARTEMUS WARD(From a portrait owned by the Lotos Club, New York) THE MORMON LECTURE The success of the jest filled him with glee. Theappreciation of the landlord, aroused from his beautysleep, is not on record. The De Soto, a restaurant on Bleecker Street justeast of Broadway, was his favorite dining-place. Herethere was usually a coterie of choice spirits to aid inenjoyment of the meal. One of these survives in theperson of George H. Story, the eminent artist, longcurator of paintings in the Metropolitan Museum ofArt, whose wife, Eunice Emerson Kimball, had been afellow-member with A. W. in the Thespian Club atNorway, Maine, long before. Dining here one day with Story, David Wambold,the minstrel, Dan Bryant, and some others, one ofthe unknown persisted in making some boresome, child-ish remarks in competition with the genuine wits.He became a nuisance, but was silenced at last byA.
