The impression, which is displayed on a plaque at the top of Wye Street, shows a market day scene with sheep being driven towards Broad Street. Information on the plaque tells us, 'In the eighteenth century this end of High Street was much higher than the present street. Three feet of soil was shovelled away in 1833 to bring the surface to the level of the new Wilton Road, which was cut into the hillside. Before this road was built the only access from the river was by Dock Pitch, now Wye Street, a steep and muddy track which carried all the traffic from the east. High pavements saved the pedestrians from the worst of the mud. The original doorway for no 53/54 High Street can be seen at first floor level on the facade. Even with high pavements it must have been reached by steps.' See this at 1588879 The plaque gives us further information about the occupants of the house at the time. 'Isaac Taylor, the map maker and engraver lived in this house. Here he is shown taking leave of his wife and daughters before starting out to complete his survey of Gloucestershire, which was published the following year. His assistant carries his hodometer for measuring distances.' |
