Bust-length portrait, the head turned to half-right;in black coat, dark gray vest, white shirt, and black bow tie. Light greenish background.Signed at lower centre: Painted from Life by Thomas Hicks, and dated Springfield,Illinois, June 14, i860. 24^ x igl/i inches Note: This historic portrait of Lincoln was painted from life in Springfield, Illinois,on the morrow of Lincolns nomination for the Presidency. Hicks was engaged, whennews of the results of the Chicago convention became known, to go immediately to makea portrait of the candidate, from which the lithograph which was circulated during thepending campaign was to be published. A letter written by the artist on Jan. 23, 1879(not now available) described the circumstances of the sittings, as follows:The first oil Portrait of Abraham Lincoln.
