Text Appearing Before Image:
crosses to the outer side of the tibialis posticus, enters the sole of the foot, passes beneath and is adherent to the tendon of the flexor longus hallucis, and divides into fourtendons for the four lesser toes. These tendons are inserted in a similar manner to those of theflexor profundus digitorum in the hand. (3) The tibialis posticus arises from the interosseousmembrane and the adjacent portions of the tibia and fibula in the upper portion of the leg be-tween the flexor longus digitorum and the flexor longus hallucis. Its tendon, with that of theflexor longus digitorum, passes behind the internal malleolus to the inner aspect of the sole of thefoot, where it is inserted into the internal cuneiform and scaphoid bones. (4) The flexor longushallucis takes origin from the posterior surface of the lower two-thirds of the fibula and from theposterior intermuscular septum. Its tendon runs in the posterior sulcus of the astragalus and Fig. 87. erior tibial nerve• tibial arteryis posticus

Tendons ofdigi THE LEG. 167 Fig. 87.—The plantar aspect of the foot. The flexor brevis digitorum muscle has been divided and portions have beencut out of the flexor longus digitorum, adductor hallucis, and flexor brevis hallucis muscles. behind the sustentaculum tali of the os calcis to the sole of the foot, crosses the tendon of theflexor longus digitorum, and is attached to the second phalanx of the great toe. Between theinternal malleolus and the tuber calcanei each of the tendons of the flexor longus digitorum, tibialis posticus, and flexor longus hallucis possesses an individual synovial sheath which isbridged over by the internal annular ligament (ligamentum laciniatum). Anterior Tibial Artery.—After the popliteal artery divides into its two terminal branchesat the upper margin of the soleus muscle, the anterior tibial artery (Fig. 85) gives off a smallposterior recurrent branch and passes anteriorly above the upper margin of the interosseousmembrane. The vessel runs downward
