Through one of thesefriends — I believe a member of the Tarascon family —he was offered a position in the Museum at Cincinnati.Without delay, or any written agreement, Audubon andhis family were again (1818) in new surroundings, andthe work being congenial, he entered heartily into it withMr. Robert Best. The promised salary was large, butbeing never paid Audubon began drawing classes to sup-port his modest household. In Cincinnati he first metMr. Daniel Mallory (whose second daughter afterwardsmarried Victor G. Audubon) and Captain Samuel Cum-mings. This latter gentleman had many tastes similar toAudubons, and later went with him to New Orleans. The life at Cincinnati was one of strict economy. To quote again:Our living here (Cincinnati) is extremely moderate;the markets are well supplied and cheap, beef only twoand a half cents a pound, and I am able to provide a gooddeal myself; Partridges are frequently in the streets, andI can shoot Wild Turkeys within a mile or so; Squirrelsand Woodcock are very abundant in the season, and fishalways easily caught. Even with these advantages, Audubon, receiving nomoney 1 from Dr. Drake, president of the Museum, de-cided on going to New Orleans. He had now a greatnumber of drawings and the idea of publishing these hadsuggested itself both to him and his wife.
