Summary

[edit]
Description

Austin 7 De-Luxe saloon (KY2999) of 1932 at Birmingham Science Museum. The De-Luxe saloon was a variant of the Austin 7. The Austin 7 was an economy car produced from 1922 until 1939 by the Austin Motor Company. Nicknamed the ‘Baby Austin’, it was one of the most popular cars ever produced for the British market, and sold well abroad. It was also licensed and copied by companies all over the world. The very first BMW car, the BMW Dixi, was a licensed Austin 7, as were the original American Austins. In France they were made and sold as Rosengarts. In Japan Nissan also used the 7 design as the basis for their first cars, although not under licence.

The now closed Museum of Science and Industry, was in a building on Newhall Street, Birmingham, previously the Elkington Silver Electroplating Works. It became the science museum of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in 1951 until its closure in 1997. Many exhibits were then moved to Thinktank which later opened as an entrance-fee-based exhibition in Millennium Point in Eastside, in September 2001.
