Summary

[edit]
Description

The Gipsy was BMC's attempt at giving the Land Rover some competition. Ultimately it didn't work out, mainly because the Gipsy used steel panels which RUSTED in the exact type of conditions it was supposed to work in, unlike the Landy which used aluminium parts. The engine was based on the Austin A70's, and later on a diesel was offered. Only 21,208 were made, before BMC merged into Leyland to create BL. At this point there was no reason to continue making the Gipsy as the Land Rover was now being produced by the same company.

This one was spotted at the fantastic classic car garage in Hinds, South Canterbury.
