Description Australian War Memorial image 013967. An Australian soldier on the beach at Cape Endaiadere demonstrates how the Japanese soldier in the water could raise his hands to surrender. The Japanese soldier was one of four who swum into the sea when Australian forces overran their positions and demanded that they surrender. Three of the soldiers were shot but this one turned for the shore. He committed suicide with a grenade shortly afterwoods, however (see: http://cas.awm.gov.au/item/013968)
