Introduction
Since World War II interest in the problems of military psychiatry
and in the experiences of psychiatrists in military service has been
persistent. This continuing interest during the post-war period is in
part a manifestation of the reaction to the continuing stress of our
times. It is also the result of a kind of professional introspection
among psychiatrists who recognize that many challenging questions
which were asked during the war remain to be better answered.
The problems which need further clarification in military psychiatry
are numerous. They include a variety of specific matters related to
diagnostic formulation, treatment methods, prognostic standards, the
effective utilization of ancillary services and the further development
of programs in preventive psychiatry and rehabilitative psychiatry.
In all of these areas of interest, the worker has been handicapped
by the lack of a systematic bibliographic reference work to the literature
of military psychiatry since World War II. Much of the literature
is scattered and is not easily located. With the completion of
this bibliography, a distinct need has been met. Although the literature
of the war years is not included herein, many of the references
cited will include bibliographies which lead to the earlier literature
published during the war years.
