—once known as the Mount ofMartyrs because of its connection with themartyrs of religion who had made this Baltimore and Ohio Magazine, October, iQ2j 35 hill their favorite spot by dying here. Hereis a famous Catholic church, the SacreCoeur, through which we were taken, andwhere several of the girls brought theirrosaries to be blessed. Old and gray look-ing on the outside, one would never dreamof the magnificence inside of its walls. That evening there was much ado aboutdressing. As usual we had only a fewminutes, but having become quite accus-tomed to dressing in a hurry, vve were soonready. Our coaches were waiting for usoutside the door of the Hotel. Coaches?Ah, yes, our regular auto buses. Some- times it did seem a bit queer to be ridingin these to the opera, but it was quite jolly. On we went, up the long hill that leadsto the Place Pigale (sometimes called byAmericans the Place Pig Alley), which isthe center of the so-called higli life ofParis. Here one may see gaily decorated
