tol Dome was TheCapitol Route, the play on theword Capitol being obvious. An-other much used theme was thatdeveloping the Pioneering History ofthe Baltimore and Ohio, The Pio-neer Route being a favorite slogan. The Service idea was developed inmany attractive forms, showlfig un-mistakably how thoroughlythe contestants associateSer\ice with the Baltimoreand Ohio. Safety wasanother engaging theme andthe Scenic Beauty of ourline was also greatly stressed. One especially convincing de-sign showed the CapitolDome in the conventionalcircle, in the upper halfof which was the railroadname, and below and balanc-ing it the three words,Safety, Service, Scenic. Many of the contestantssent notes-explaining why theyfelt their ideas worthy. Thestrongest letters came fromthose who championed thefamiliar and favorite CapitolDome design and who depre-cated the possibility of losingthe yearsold i^rcstige which ithas won as representative ofthe Baltimore and Ohio. 6 Baltimore and Ohio Magazine, August IQ23
