Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Barics Aberdaron Barracks. These, at 2,100, were the highest barracks at Dinorwig Quarry. On a fine summer's evening, the view from here is fantastic and one can imagine the quarrymen, who stayed here from Monday to Friday nights inclusive, sitting outside conversing, smoking their pipes and looking down towards their homes in Western Anglesey. Likewise, one can try and imagine what it was like in the depth of winter. Heating for barracks throughout the quarry was provided by coal fires and the coal had to bought from the company and sent up from Gilfach Ddu at the very bottom of the quarry. In the mid 1920s, as the Quarry's 'Llyfr Cownt Glo'(Coal Account Book) shows, coal was 2s 2d a hundredweight. Each barrack used about 56lbs a week. Because of the increasing reluctance of men to opt for Aberdaron, the company decided to provide free coal for the barracks and to provide an armchair for each man. The rent at Aberdaron in 1925 was only 1s a month. However, there was no piped water and the men depended on a mountain spring for water to drink, cook and to wash in. 292242
