amlets cluster in a valley. The lights of earlymorning twinkle in the houses. Some farmer isdressing by lamp-light. Perhaps you dressed bylamp-light to catch the train. Perhaps you onlyrecall, as you lie in your berth and rub your eyesawake, those far-off days when you often saw thesun rise, days when life was as fresh as those hillswhich now rise, dew-washed and clean, beyondyour car window, so high that to see the tops ofthem you have to crane your neck. If you are aboy, the mystery of what lies beyond those hillsis heavy upon you. You think of other valleysand higher ranges, and your soul expands. Thensuddenly the train swings round a bend. Per-haps you see your own locomotive, always athrilling sight no matter what your age; and,at any rate, the car window encases fora moment the vista down the track insteadof the habitual side view. Day is coming onrapidly. It flushes that hill into which thetrack seems to vanish like the Pie3 Piper, andshows you the green cleft under high ledges

A moment, and you are in that cleft, under theshadow of the cliffs which make almost a secondnight as they tower over your window with theirdark evergreens clinging to every ledge andcranny. Youhave the sensation of bursting through the moun-tain range.
