While French was advancing to Rensburg inthe last days of December a small column ofirregular horse with four guns had been pushed enemy, uho were said to be approaching fromthe direction of Stormberg junction. Thepatrol was made up of 100 men of BrabantsHorse, under Captain Flannigan and LieutenantTurner. They met and drove in a party ofBoers of about the same strength ; but as theBoers fell back they were reinforced by 500more with two guns. But they hadtaken refuge in a donga, or hollow watercourse, and there they defended themselves during thenight and successfully kept the Boers at bay.In the morning Captain Goldsworthy, with acompany of Brabants Horse, Montmorencyand his scouts, and four guns, came out fromDordrecht, drove off the Boers, and broughtthe handful of brave fellows safely back intothe town. Dalgety held on at Dordrecht, skirmishingoccasionally with the Boers, who threatenedhim, but did not venture on an attack in force. His presence on the extreme right of Gatacresdistrict seemed to suggest to Olivier at Storm-berg junction that the British were movingaway to that flank, and that the force holdingSterkstroom camp had been weakened. Earlyon the morning of January 3rd he made anattack on Gatacres outposts at Molteno andCyphergat. The Molteno outpost was at thepolice station, two miles south of the village, and on the road between it
