Summary
[edit]DescriptionBeckford's Tower (25356367986).jpg | Built in 1827 by William Thomas Beckford (architect Henry Goodridge) as a folly and retreat at Lansdown on the outskirts of Bath, Somerset. Originally known as Lansdown Tower, the base building is in Italianate style with the tower based on the Tower of Winds at Athens, surmounted by a gilded belvedere. After Beckford's death in 1844, the tower and grounds was sold to a local publican as a beer garden (!). In 1848 it was then sold the property to Walcot Parish Council who converted the tower to a chapel and the grounds to a cemetary, closed in 1992 when Bath Preservation Trust restored the tower and converted it to a guest house. |
