Summary

Description

St George's Church, Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

English: Tripartite stained glass window in the east wall of the sanctuary, created in the late 1860s by the studio of Alexander Gibbs, London. The centre window depicts a cross with a crown of thorns and quotes 1 Corinthians 15:55: “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”. The quote of Revelation 14:13 is spread over the bottom sections of all three lights: “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord”. Below are the names of nine parishioners in whose memory the window was erected: John Harrison IP DL May 5 1857, Henry Purdon MD Sep 11 1843, Anne Purdon Feb 27 1853 (left light), James Crawford Aug 25 1860, Elizabeth Hind June 11 1864, Arthur E. Preston July 3 1867 (right light), and three others named in the centre light (as the bottom section of is obstructed by the altar I was not able to read it. Walker names William Clarke and the architect W. J. Barre). (See Brian M. Walker, A History of St George's Church Belfast, p. 68–70.)
