At some times andin some places, telephone calls wereanswered only on an emergency basis.But all important ones were takencare of, and it was not long before allcalls were being handled. Western Pennsylvania was fortu-nate in escaping major damage to out-side plant. But both sleet and Hoodsharassed parts of the Central Area,and torrential rains accompanied thegale which staggered much of theEastern Area. Yet despite its own troubles, the Bell Telephone Com-pany of Pennsylvania was able tosend five crews to the aid of its neigh-bor, the New Jersey Bell TelephoneCompany. Hot Wires New Jersey was, proportionately,hardest hit of all the Companies af-fected by the storm. By the time itsfury had abated, Saturday evening.2,000 cables were damaged orbroken, and 135,000 telephones weredead. Their wires werehot, however, and when they fellacross telephone lines, they werelikely to inHict power burns on thetelephone cables. Short circuits andarcs would melt the cable sheath,damage the wires, and admit mois-ture; and if the cables had withstoodthe gale so far, they then went outof service—pronto. Moreover, inmany cases telephone men could notstart the process of untangling andrepairing their own plant until cur-rent had been cut off in the live power wires. Telephone and electric com-panies throughout the storm area rec-ognized that they were both victimsof the unpredictable forces of Na-ture, and cooperation among themwas cordial.
