The announcement addedthat the schedule time from San Fran-cisco to New York was: for telegraphdispatches—which were carried, ofcourse, only between the two termi-nal points of the telegraph lines—ninedays; for letters, thirteen days. Theannounced rates for both letters andtelegraph dispatches were: betweenSan Francisco and Salt Lake City,three dollars per half ounce and un-der, and to all points beyond SaltLake City, five dollars per half ounceand under, and at these rates accord-ing to weight. W iTHOUT going too minutely intodetails, the route may be describedas running westward from St. Joseph,Mo., via the valley of the Platte Riverto Fort Kearney, Julesburg, FortLaramie, South Pass, and FortBridger, to Salt Lake City. Fromthis point it ran, a little south of duewest, through Carson City, over theSierra Nevadas to the south of LakeTahoe, to Placerville, and thence toSacramento. For the firsttime in history, mails had covered halfthe width of the continent in a littleover ten days. Figures on the volume of mail han-dled by the Pony Express riders aredifficult to obtain. It is stated thaton an average, forty-one letters pertrip were carried to the Pacific coastbetween November, 1860, and April,1861. From April, 1861, to July ofthat year, the average was sixty-four,and from that date to the terminationof the service in October, 1861, the average was ninety.
