This goal was reached through the whole-hearted efforts ofthe men and women who formed thepersonnel of the Exhibit. Helpful,interested, and friendly, these tele-phone employees were actuated byreal loyalty. They sincerely wantedthe public to leave our Exhibit withan enhanced appreciation of the spiritof service in the Bell System. Wealso realized that we were not build-ing good will for the Pacific Tele-phone and Telegraph Company alonebut that we were operating this Ex-hibit in the interest of the entire BellSystem, and that the attitude and con-duct of our personnel would affect theopinion of the public in regard to allBell System people. All members of the Exhibit per-sonnel, with the exception of the pageboys, were selected from the operat-ing forces of the telephone companybecause they were already imbuedwith a basic loyalty to the Bell System i9U0 The Golden Gate Exposition 79

The young women on theExhibit staff were chosen not only be-cause of their pleasing appearance butbecause of indications through theirwork and through activities outsidetheir jobs that they were interested inpeople and the activities of their com-munity. Ihe development and training ofthe personnel was based on a programof reviewing with each person thebackground of the telephone business,and the policy, relationship, aims, andideals of the Bell System, in order tobuild a sound foundation upon whichto base a feeling of personal responsi-bility in representing the Bell Systemto the public. In all our contactswith them we stressed the fact thatthe publics good will could be earnedonly as they entered into a real part-nership relation for the success of the Exhibit.
