Ihere is hardly an employee of theBell System who does not have occa-sion to use some items of stationeryand printed forms in a normal work-ing day. While the unit value ofmost of these items is small, in theaggregate they represent a consider-able sum. In view of this compara-tively low unit value, it is essentialthat the supply distribution plan op-erate in such a manner as to pre-clude, so far as practical, the neces-sity of placing orders for less thanstandard package lots. A close bal-ance must be maintained between thevalue of the supplies being ordered,the average investment, and the costof placing, filling and transporting theorder. During the past several years muchprogress has been made toward co-ordinating these elements, and thecost of distributing these supplies isbeing brought within practical limitsas related to their value. In many companies it is customaryto have stationery and printed formsstocked only at the district offices.The smaller locations and the indi-vidual employees are supplied fromthe district office stock as the needsarise.
